Dead on the WaterDead on the Water by R.W.K. Clark
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dead on the Water: Abandon Ship is a well crafted Sci-Fi Fantasy Horror. And I would imagine that fans of this genre will love sinking their teeth into this one! I have read this author several times before and must say I’m always very impressed.

The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.

Thanks to a sick, twisted scientist in Belize, a terrible thing has found its way about the ship. It is about to take over everyone and everything, and neither the captain, his crew, or any passenger on board will be immune. Welcome to Dead on the Water, a trembling good tale by RWK Clark. I personally was most entertained by the part where the captain, who is now the leader of the zombie movement, addresses all of his troops on the deck of the ship, relating his plan to them. Just picturing the situation and feeling the despair of it was enough to make me say, “I love it! Bring on more!”

This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. There are twists and turns in this page turner that will take the reader on a gripping journey!

It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!

I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from RWK Clark in the future! I would definitely recommend this book. I’d give this 6 stars if I could. Unfortunately, I can only give it a mere 5!

She Was Born a Good Girl: An All Girls Boarding School StoryShe Was Born a Good Girl: An All Girls Boarding School Story by Garfield Whyte
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A well-crafted coming of age tale…

Author Garfield Whyte weaves a vibrant and very interesting coming of age tale, with fascinating twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints an all-girls boarding school story in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a relatively fast-paced novel that will keep you captivated from the first page to the last.

The book description gives a sneak preview; ‘Raunchy Zoe, prude Nola, follow-fashion Myra, indecisive Jody and man-hunter Anona. It’s final year at the Rosemount School, a prestigious all-girls boarding school in Jamaica where parents send their daughters to become ladies; but some girls allow their raging hormones to turn them into renegades. No-nonsense, principal, Lenora Mustafa has her hands full with these girls as she strives to maintain the school’s enviable reputation. Everyone is different in this sisterhood, but they all share a common goal to graduate at the end of this school year. How will final year go?’

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.

Engaging, and entertaining, this work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly mesmerizing journey!

If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Garfield Whyte in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. I honestly think this would make a great movie. Five stars from me.

Children of the Night: A NovelChildren of the Night: A Novel by T.C Paul
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A powerful and poignant story...

‘China's one-child policy was part of a birth planning program designed to control the size of its population. Distinct from the family planning policies of most other countries (which focus on providing contraceptive options to help women have the number of children they want), it set a limit on the number of children parents could have, the world's most extreme example of population planning.’ It was introduced in 1979 and eliminated at the end of 2015.

Those ‘children of the night’ were excluded from the family register which meant they did not possess a Hukou, which is "an identifying document, similar in some ways to the American social security card." In this respect they did not legally exist and as a result couldn’t access most public services, such as education and health care, and did not receive protection under the law.

Author T.C Paul weaves a heart-rending, emotional and inspirational story that will captivate the reader from the beginning. The author paints a dramatic and fascinating tale of a deep longing in a very vivid and convincing way.

Children of the Night had every element a good story should have. A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book. The Ghost YearsThe Ghost Years by Mutch Katsonga
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Masterclass in Storytelling...

Author Mutch Katsonga weaves an outstanding and noteworthy tale of drug addiction and homelessness, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a compelling story of despair and hope in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a relatively fast-paced novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last. The emotion is accomplished in the delivery of exciting and titillating prose. From wildish illusions through detailed, graphic scenes, the concept is wonderfully delivered in truly amazing writing.

I’ve no doubt you’ll walk away a better person for having read this extraordinary story. It’s given me a different perspective and understanding on the plight of drug addicts and the homeless. In so much that, there’s something to be gained when we trade a longing for truth and authenticity for the hope that new modes of storytelling can be found and disseminated, stories that might make people whom we wouldn’t willingly invite into our living rooms seem familiar enough so that we might want to change our minds.

The book description gives a sneak preview; ‘Sometimes our simplest wishes can be the most difficult to attain. The Ghost Years is brutally honest and jarring, from its immersive beginning right through to it's startling, unpredictable conclusion. It's a young man's attempt to pick up the pieces and start over only to be presented with greater obstacles than he could ever have envisioned. He is taken to unimaginable and devastating places, both physically and mentally. How much control does he really have over his fate? The Ghost Years goes deep beneath the surface through unflinching plot twists and hauntingly poetic prose.’

Now, if that’s not enough to get your whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. It’s my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.

The Ghost Years is a brilliant read that somehow leaves you feeling more enlightened for having read it. It’s an impressive work and I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Very few books had this kind of impact on me. Read it and you’ll know what I mean. Furthermore, I could easily see this being adapted as a television series or even receiving a sympathetic Hollywood treatment. A well-deserved five stars from me.

More often than not children relate themselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help them to get inspiration from the characters. The Day My Fart Followed Me To The ZooThe Day My Fart Followed Me To The Zoo by Ben Jackson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The title alone made my grandkids laugh and giggle!

Farts are funny. There’s just no way to get around it. No matter who you are, or what your background is, chances are you have found some kind of fart, or something even sounding like a fart, pretty darn funny! Children know this, and fathers know this because their children keep reminding them of it all the time. There is no way to get more joy out of children with less work!

This is an amazing fun book for readers of all ages. I read it with my grandkids and they loved not only the story, but also the illustrations (by Danko Herrera). I thought the text and illustrations worked well together. This time Timmy and his best friend the Little Fart walk around the zoo together, visiting the animals and learning fun facts. Anybody who is following this series will know that they are in for another great adventure!

I have shared your stories with my own family and we have all found great delight in them. Thank you for sharing with us the gift that you have obviously worked so hard to refine. I trust your book will soon be on the best seller list. If not, it should be!

Finally, my advice as a parent and grandparent on the subject of farting would be to just let them roll, laugh at them, take a step back if you have to, and just be immature about it for a minute or two. They don’t say laughter is the best medicine for nothing. A good laugh can actually improve your health, strengthen your immune system, improve mood, lessen pain and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. That’s why I stated above that this book is suitable for all ages! Another well deserved five stars again from us.

The author paints a suspenseful supernatural tale in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. While checking into his background, Detective Daniel Nash discovers an ominous smear on the town’s past, the unsolved disappearance of young Timothy Waters who went missing three decades ago from the very same camp Charlie was caretaker of.

Forgotten police records from the incident detail five other children from the camp, not so friendly associates of Timmy’s. Nash invites them in for interviews, hoping they can shed light on who may have wanted Charlie dead, as well as what happened the night of Timmy’s disappearance.

As a series of unexpected rain storms roll through the rural town, the individuals with ties to Timmy and Charlie begin to drop one by one. While each death is different than the last, they all are equally terrifying and vaguely similar.

Will Detective Nash be able to solve the cases both past and present and stop these strange deaths before it’s too late, or will the rain drown away the answers?’

An expressive, emotional and captivating read...

Each of these healings gets you closer to a more accepting and peaceful life. There are simply no other routes but straight through your own heart and soul.

A Dress The Color of The Sky by Jennifer Irwin is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive adult novel. The author weaves a well-crafted story with emotional highs and lows that will captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. Skillfully constructed, this biographical fiction revolves around the main character Prudence (Prue), set against the backdrop of sexual abuse and addiction.

There’s no doubt that A Dress The Color of The Sky is an exceptionally well-written book. However, it must be said that this story is not for the faint-hearted or easily offended. The author’s script at times is razor-sharp and will cut deep into the emotions of its reader. There are scenes of a sexual nature. Nevertheless, the themes and outcome are just as affecting in the arresting contemporary landscape of sexual addiction.

This was a fascinating and captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. On the cellphone are his wife’s last words. “Perhaps you have the urge to shut me off, or at least to ignore what I’m about to say. But listen you must, because even if you don’t believe it, you’re already much too close to danger… Neil is my undoing. Make sure he isn’t yours.”

Now, if that’s not enough to get your curiosity juices flowing, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. I’ve read this author several times and I must say I was very impressed yet again. She delivers every time.

I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class thriller with perfect pacing. Not much is as it appears here, which is just the way fans of mystery, thriller and suspense will want it!

This was a fascinating and captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and as always, the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly mesmerizing journey!

I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

A chance meeting in the Atlanta airport with a U. S. Senator from his hometown thrusts Vic into a murder investigation when the man turns up dead shortly after they speak. The unwanted case produces more questions than answers. Why did the Senator ask Vic to deliver a Christmas card for him rather than mailing it himself, and why does the recipient react with hostility when she finds out who it’s from? Why is the FBI looking at Vic up close and personal when he wasn’t involved in the killing? And why does a police detective from Atlanta show up in Sandusky, asking questions that have little to do with the murder investigation? Vic’s life becomes more complicated when the woman he delivered the card to is arrested after an accidental shooting, and he feels a responsibility to prove her innocence. Add the strain that the case places on Vic’s current romantic relationship, and it results in the holiday from Hell. He seeks penance for past deeds as he hunts DeathSpeakers - humans mutated by radiation and the interminable Dark Plague, able to kill a hundred men just by speaking a single word.

Mortimer is a DeathSpeaker. Born with his mouth sewn shut with unbreakable wires that will unseal his lips upon the arrival of his tenth year, he has been kidnapped from the only home he has ever known. Dragged across the wasteland of the world to destinations unknown by the servants of Master, a puppeteer hiding always in the shadows, his singular attempt at escape thrusts him into the arms of Ricker.

When a jewel rumored to grant any one wish ends up in the hands of the illusive Master, Ricker and Mortimer are forced to work together to escape, but there is too much they don't know, and this is only the start of it.’

It's Not Easy Being A Little Fart (My Little Fart Book 7)It's Not Easy Being A Little Fart by Ben Jackson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Little Fart introduces us to his family!

Authors Ben Jackson and Sam Lawrence write in a wonderful style that guarantees the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a fun read to share with them. I read it with my grandkids and we loved it. I also thought the text and illustrations (by Danko Herrera) worked very well together.

Here are some wise words from Little Fart: “We may all be different, but together we are just one big happy family! It’s important that you love your family equally. Just because someone may be a little noisier or smellier, doesn’t make them a bad person, just different. We don’t always get along together, but in the end we’re family.”

It seems to me that this book has been created with a lot of love and joy and it’s apparent that the authors really enjoy creating such wonderful fun stories. Even though this is book 7 of 7 in the My Little Fart series, we’ll still be looking forward to seeing what’s coming next from Ben and Sam. Five stars from us. Another fun read and well done again!

The 231 Club: My Ten Year Journey From Therapist to CIA Courier and Sanctioned Kills - A True StoryThe 231 Club: My Ten Year Journey From Therapist to CIA Courier and Sanctioned Kills - A True Story by J. Bartell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The 231 Club is well written and I certainly appreciated the author’s voice and the casual style. It also made me think what I would have done if I were in his shoes. Take the safe road and stay in my day job of therapist or take the one going left to the big unknown with plenty of risks along the way?

Fortunately I was in my armchair enjoying the dilemma. All in all, the book is very interesting, both in the author’s background as well as in the various stories he tells of life in the fast lane. The author’s adventures make for very good reading especially when you know they are true tales of CIA exploits. What may have started as high level thinking about the jobs that needed to be done in South America or Latin America during this time period was soon relegated to the people who actually had to carry them out and they often did so with very little resources or help from the upper level “suits”.

This was a very interesting read and I would highly recommend it.

Daddy's Curse 2: A Young Boy Who Has Survived Child Slavery Remembers… (True stories of child slavery survivors #2)Daddy's Curse 2: A Young Boy Who Has Survived Child Slavery Remembers… by Luke. G. Dahl
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is my second time reading this author. His previous work, Daddy's Curse: A Sex Trafficking True Story of an 8-Year Old Girl was a gripping first-person account of organized crime and human trafficking. This book is about a young boy, named Od, who has also survived child slavery.

It’s worth stating here again what I had previously said about this authors’ last book: Human trafficking is thought to be one of the fastest-growing activities of trans-national criminal organizations. It is condemned as a violation of human rights by international agreements. ‘Human trafficking is a crime of such magnitude and atrocity that it cannot be dealt with successfully by any government alone. This global problem requires a global, multi-stakeholder strategy that builds on national efforts throughout the world.’

The book description gives a poignant preview: ‘When Od was growing up with his grandfather in the mesmerizing yet poverty-stricken countryside of Mongolia, he didn’t know that his life was about to turn into a living hell. His own grandparents sold him to child traffickers who took him away from his village and turned him into a slave, along with other children from the region.

Od, Altantsetseg, Chinua and Khulan were all held captive by child traffickers, but Od, being the oldest and smartest, managed to come up with an escape plan. Altantsetseg and Chinua escaped but Khulan didn’t make it. A shot was heard from behind and it was the last time they saw Khulan. But they had to keep on moving.

Yuna. Od’s only love was going through the same hell. She managed to escape from her abusers, only to find herself back in the hands of traffickers. When she finally found her way to freedom, Od found her. That was a moment of happiness in a lifetime of sorrow.

In this eye-opening child abuse story, Luke G. Dahl, author of the best-selling book “Daddy’s Curse” offers us a different perspective. Od is a young boy and his experiences in Mongolia, China and Thailand, his efforts to overcome his emotional wounds and his struggles to find Yuna will give you a unique way to truly understand child abuse and respect for life.’

Author Luke. G. Dahl writes a significant but harrowing story – based on true events - of sexual abuse, human trafficking and organized crime. It’s an emotional story that will take you on a journey to the dark side of human nature. The author must be commended for highlighting this truly appalling crime against the future of mankind…OUR CHILDREN.
