Goodbye Homeboy: How My Students Drove Me Crazy and Inspired a Movement

Goodbye Homeboy: How My Students Drove Me Crazy and Inspired a MovementGoodbye Homeboy: How My Students Drove Me Crazy and Inspired a Movement by Steve Mariotti
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bringing entrepreneurship education to low-income youth...

Goodbye Homeboy: How My Students Drove Me Crazy and Inspired a Movement by Steve Mariotti is a poignant, emotive and humorous memoir of his career as a special ed teacher in New York City’s most dangerous public high schools during the early 1980s. The author demonstrates how he managed to engage with low-income youth in education, equipping them with the necessary skills to help raise them out of poverty. He has influenced and changed the lives of millions of people worldwide.

We all have abilities that we can use to make a difference in someone's life. It could be to just let them know that they are important and to be sure to say or convey in some way these simple words, "YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE." The point is to keep the thought of MAKING A DIFFERENCE foremost in your mind as you go about your day. However, this book takes that basic principle to a whole different level! It was a great read. Highly recommended.

Why Liv? by Jon Sebastian Shifrin

Why Liv?Why Liv? by Jon Sebastian Shifrin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An entertaining page-turning story...

The great escape from office life are thoughts which flood the minds of many people living in quiet desperation of yet another day on the job. Why Liv? by Jon Sebastian Shifrin tells the story of a corporate employee in his 20s disillusioned with his job, his shallow girlfriend, his narcissistic parents and the current political landscape he finds himself in. So, he up sticks and moves to Spain.

George Bernard Shaw once said, “The problem with political jokes is that they get elected.” People enjoy political humor because it’s something that everyone can relate to. The public generally blames the government for everything, so everyone basically appreciates humor in politics. In truth, this particular source of hilarity is almost always delivered in a satire-like manner.

Why Liv? is cleverly written and witty. This book is a satire, and a good one. It’s an entertaining, page-turning story that will keep the reader involved. The core of the story ‘humbly attempts to offer a reason to persevere in these difficult times.’

Boot: A Sorta Novel of Vietnam

Boot: A Sorta Novel of VietnamBoot: A Sorta Novel of Vietnam by Charles L. Templeton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Funny how mad the world can be sometimes..

Inspired by the author’s own experiences of US military operations during the Vietnam War, Boot: A Sorta Novel of Vietnam by Charles Templeton combines both satire and psychology in this wonderfully written and richly descriptive historical fiction.

There’s no doubt for me that Boot: A Sorta Novel of Vietnam is an exceptionally well-written book. However, it must be said that this story is not for the faint-hearted. The author’s script at times is razor-sharp and will cut deep into the emotions of its reader. There are shocking and intensely graphic scenes. Nevertheless, the themes and outcome are just as affecting in the arresting contemporary landscape when you consider you don’t have to look too far to see the appalling consequences of war even today.

This ‘Sorta Novel’ could only have been written by an individual who experienced war firsthand. Read it and you’ll know what I mean. Highly recommended and a well deserved five stars from me.

Nightmare Along the River Nile

Nightmare Along the River Nile (Ebook)Nightmare Along the River Nile by S.E. Nelson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A powerful narrative about a young man and his loyal friends...

Enslaving another human being is one of the greatest crimes against humanity. Simply because it robs the person of their sense of self, the ability to develop their unlimited potential, and their individual freedom. Slavery was one of the most horrific events in human history, however, this atrocity against humanity continues to this day. The author states that this story was inspired by actual events that happened to many young boys and girls in the 1990s in Northern Uganda, who were abducted by the LRA rebels.

Nightmare Along the River Nile by S. E. Nelson is a fact-based story set against the backdrop of the brutality, oppression and slavery against the people of sub-Saharan Africa. The author tells of Edgar, while on his way home after finishing high school exams, ‘his bus is ambushed by rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda. He and other students are abducted and taken to the LRA headquarters in Sudan where evil awaits. He finds himself caught up in a nightmare he never imagined, and his life is forever changed. Edgar's friends learn of his fate and embark on a challenging and unpredictable rescue mission full of twists and turns.’

Books that cover this kind of subject matter deserve to do well. The author must be commended for highlighting a despicable truth that still goes on in the world today. However, for me, the writing style made this a somewhat difficult read. I found it detracted from the overall message and the urgency desperately needed to bring about an end to modern-day slavery. With additional proofreading and editorial attention this book has the potential of making a great piece of writing. 3 ½ stars from me.

The Fourth Year Spell

The Fourth Year Spell (Elnar, #1)The Fourth Year Spell by Amanda Jeffery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Spells And Potions Sprinkled With Sex And Sorcery...

Author Amanda Jeffery constructs a well-crafted fantasy, action and adventure novella. With intriguing twists and turns, it will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints an exciting and adventurous story of sex and sorcery in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction.

The story had every element a good story should have. A solid and captivating plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s plenty of imagery in the writing style that makes you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘Declan Devereaux is finally ready to complete his Fourth Year Spell so he can move on to the next year of studies. All that's left is one ingredient and he's ready to get it from the Mayor's Manor. Unbeknownst to Declan, the local Thieve's Guild also has plans to rob the Manor on the same night. When they meet mid-robbery, Declan casts a spell that sets the four of them on a path that may end at the gallows.’

I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. It was one of those books that comes along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. For those looking for an interesting, three-dimensional and stimulating short read, this would be a great find.  I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.

Black's Innocence (Black Family Series Book 5) by award winning author Sylvia Hubbard is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive adult novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a well-crafted multicultural amorous suspense, that will captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning.

The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. I enjoyed the story and character development. There were plenty of intriguing moments that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. The erotica is accomplished in the delivery of exciting and titillating prose. From mild illusions through detailed, sexy scenes, the concept is perfectly delivered in truly amazing storytelling.

Even though this is the fifth instalment in the Black Family Series, it can be read as a standalone. Recommended for those interested in multicultural romance and erotica, sprinkled with suspense and intrigue. A final edit is needed to polish the story.

This new book provides the reader with techniques to change and enrich the internal mind processes in order to improve personality, character, and attitude through his/her own efforts and positive mind programming; thereby creating a lasting change in them. Self-improvement begins with self-understanding, knowing your true potential and of being aware that you are unique. Improvement can be measured in many ways, in a variety of contexts. What really does matter is how the individual sees his or her "self", and what they would perceive as improvement to that "self". This book provides very important guidelines in self-improvement and ways of raising human consciousness. Highly recommended.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A medical mystery thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat...

An Eye For Murder by Martin Sherwood is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a well-crafted medical mystery thriller with a generous sprinkling of suspense throughout. Intriguing twists and turns ensures that this book will captivate the reader from the first page to the last. The story unfurls in small acts, at first feeling slight to touch, then building in emotional substance. Into the spaces between the words, the author breathes a pulsating intensity that rolls like a motion picture camera.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘A brilliant egocentric scientist is close to a breakthrough that will make cataract surgery unnecessary. Professor Lucy Efron administers drops synthesized in her lab, which are secretly tested on elderly people, later found in the cemetery, their eyes mysteriously removed. As Efron approaches the final clinical trial with her 12th test tube, she reveals that two presidents of major pharmaceutical companies are battling over her formula and nothing – absolutely NOTHING, will stop them from getting this precious 12th tube. The deadly clinical trial could have gone unnoticed, were it not for Milbert, a naïve medical student, whose grandmother suffers from Alzheimer. She alerts him about the disappearing tenants in her nursing home and says that she might be the next on the murderous list. As Milbert begins his own investigation and gets closer to unveiling the plot, he understands that he has only one shot at stopping the murder of more innocent people, but it could cost him his own life.’

The story had every element a good story should have. A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book. I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class mystery, thriller and suspense with perfect pacing.

She’s then abducted by the detective assigned to the case and sold to an unidentified group of people lurking off of an unmarked highway exit. Gabby’s feral runaway sister Nikki will stop at nothing to find and rescue her.’

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A creepy page-turner...

The Hands Resist Him: Be Careful What You Bid For by Darren Kyle O'Neill held my interest and I enjoyed the story for the most part. The book title is a bit misleading in that the only "true events" is a painting created by artist Bill Stoneham in 1972. This fictional chiller is based on that event. ‘The painting became the subject of an urban legend and a viral internet meme in February 2000 when it was posted for sale on eBay along with a description implying that it was haunted.’

I enjoyed the story, character development and dialogue. There were plenty of chilling twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. A spiritual guide that awakens your true inner voice...

Not all self-help books are created equally. Some provide step-by-step instructions on how to improve a given area of your life. Others provide moral support, motivation, and sprinkle a little inspiration upon the words putting the individual in a positive mood which may be just enough to help. Unknown Truth: A Guide to Consciousness, Spiritual Awakening, and the Joy of Living by Edward Scott ‘offers personal anecdotes and practical exercises intended to show you how to live in conscious contact with your inner higher power.’ It’s a ‘complete spiritual guide designed to lead to awareness of your thoughts and actions that blocks you from being awake to your true inner voice.’

No matter what your situation is today, this book will put you on the right path to better things. I’ve been around the block a few times and even I found this read to be very insightful. This wonderful new book will show you how to properly tune into life and the simple rules you must follow to achieve this. This by far is one of the best Self-Improvement books I’ve read in a long time. The author must be commended for his time and effort for producing such an insightful book. Also, the writing style is friendly which makes for an enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

The Uncommon Man by Celedonio Javier is a very vivid and compelling read. This meaningfully written narrative is the living record of a man who triumphed over humble beginnings to become a confidante of former President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos. 16 Bizarre True Crime Stories of Murderous Moms...

Bestselling author Jack Rosewood does not disappoint with this book with all of the shock and horrifying details in it. This really was one of those "hard to put down" books and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The entire time I was reading this book I had a constant feeling of disbelief.

It's an insightful and graphically detailed account of some of the most horrific real-life crimes. In fact, while reading yet another of Jack Rosewoods books I just had to keep turning the pages yet again. Not necessarily because it's all that enjoyable in any way, shape or form, to delve a little too deeply into the malefic minds of such murderous individuals, but because I sincerely believe that most people are fascinated in one way or another by true-life crime. Perhaps it’s the human morbid fascination with death. I’m not exactly sure. However, maybe it just astounds the average person as to how depraved another individual can be. This book is even more astounding as it deals with women who murder their own children.

The book delves deeply into 16 bizarre true crime stories of murderous mothers. Even if you are a seasoned campaigner of true crime, Killer Moms: 16 Bizarre True Crime Stories of Murderous Moms will surely raise more than a few hairs on the back of your neck. It was a good read and the author gave a perspective to these horrific crimes that was both fascinating and riveting. This was one of the better true crime books that I have read recently.

I would highly recommend this read to all fans of the true crime genre. I’m also a big fan of Jack Rosewood so it’s another 5 Stars from me. Well done again!

Passerby: Quotes for the Traveler Through LifePasserby: Quotes for the Traveler Through Life by Gilad Segev
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

‘Being able to belong everywhere by not belonging anywhere.’

Human nature isn't likely to change any time soon. With an ever-expanding menu of shiny objects to distract us and a 24-hour day that stubbornly refuses to grow any longer, the average human attention span continues to dwindle into the microsecond-scale. It’s no wonder that literary inspiration has such a short shelf life!

Passerby: Quotes for the Traveler Through Life by Gilad Segev is a double treat in that the book not only contains beautiful and inspiring picture quotes, it also comes with a free downloadable selection of music. The songs were meditative and peaceful and worked well in conjunction with the book. ‘Coming back to you’ and ‘Me – Passerby’ (with Elisse Samuel) were two of my favorite songs. The artist has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve heard in years.

A very enjoyable indulgence that comes highly recommended and gets a well-deserved five stars from me.

Budotherapy: Embrace Your Inner Peaceful Warrior while Using Compassion Focused Therapy to Cope with Fear and Pain

BudotherapyBudotherapy by Gabo Weis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As the author states in his introduction: ‘This book addresses people who deal with the sensitive space that exists during the encounter between therapist and client, as well as the encounter within a supervisory relationship. In the same breath, the book deals with the delicate and sometimes fragile meeting space between an educator and his students, between parents and their children, and between spouses.’

Budotherapy by Gabo Weis is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the observation and analysis of the experience of the therapist, the client, and the session itself, from the viewpoint of traditional Japanese martial arts - or what might be called "The Budo.” That concept alone made this one of the most interesting books I’ve read in years.

The therapeutic core of the book comes from Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), a system of psychotherapy developed by Paul Gilbert that integrates techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) along with other concepts. According to Gilbert, "One of its key concerns is to use compassionate mind training to help people develop and work with experiences of inner warmth, safeness and soothing, via compassion and self-compassion."

This book has helped me clarify my thinking, process my feelings, and make better decisions. If you are you ready to stop drifting and design a life you love, this read with help you on your journey. The author has put his heart in the pages of this book and will encourage and give hope to the reader. So many wonderful and courageous people share their experiences through books, and I thank this author for sharing his.

Highly recommended reading and a well-deserved five stars from me. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. Arigatou gozaimasu.

Don't Fart In The Pool

Don't Fart In The Pool!Don't Fart In The Pool! by Ben Jackson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

To squeeze or not to squeeze… that is the question!

More often than not children relate themselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help them to get inspiration from the characters. These stories often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for them to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these stories at regular intervals can actually help them to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.

Don't Fart In The Pool is another delightful book by Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson that young children will get a lot of fun out of. I read it with my grand-kids and we laughed out loud while reading it! They loved not only this funny story, but also the amazing illustrations by Tanya Zeinalova. I thought the text and illustrations worked very well together.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘A small mistake could potentially haunt you for years to come, and one little ‘slip’ could be what haunts Stan for the rest of his life! It may have started with an epic taco fiesta to end all taco fiestas but ended with the mother of all disasters for young Stanley. What should have been an uneventful swim at the local swimming pool quickly turned into a world-class environmental disaster!’

Sam and Ben write in a wonderfully simple and imaginative style that will guarantee the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a lovely story to share with them.

It seems to me that this book was created with a lot of love and joy and it’s clear that the authors really enjoy creating such wonderful stories. Thank you for sharing with us the gift that you have obviously worked so hard to refine. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. A well-deserved five stars from us!

The Hatch by Michelle Saftich

The HatchThe Hatch by Michelle Saftich
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A gripping sci-fi that will have you on the edge of your seat...

Forty-some years ago my uncle gave me a science fiction anthology. It was a thick red hardback that I read from cover to cover. It inspired a lifelong love of the genre. The stories in that book made me think outside the box. They filled me with awe for the imagination it took to write them. That book still remains in my collection today. The title is OMNIBUS OF SCIENCE FICTION, edited by Groff Conklin, a well-known and prolific editor of the genre. It was published in 1952, the Golden Age of Science Fiction. It’s a substantial volume, 562 pages, with 43 stories divided into sections relating to a common theme. Some stories are fun, some are thought-provoking, and some are adventurous. I love them all.

The Hatch by Michelle Saftich is a brilliantly written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a well-crafted Sci-Fi action and adventure that will enthrall the reader from the start. Skillfully constructed, this exciting and energetic Sci-Fi will have you turning the pages from beginning to end.

I enjoyed the story, character development and dialogue. There were plenty of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s magnetism. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class sci-fi story with perfect pacing.

I’m a big fan of science fiction, so this for me was a phenomenal read. For sci-fi fans looking for an interesting, three-dimensional and stimulating read, this would be a great find. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.

I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Australian born author, Michelle Saftich in the future. This is a name to watch out for! A well-deserved five stars from me.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Create your own reality...

Writing memoirs is a unique way to cherish your past and present with the future in mind. A well-written memoir makes a splendid gift to your upcoming generations and leaves them with a vivid, personal look at your life experiences. The goal of any person should be to, hopefully, create positive memories that last a lifetime. When you recount your life experience to others, it should invoke in you something that stirs the soul and a longing for the bygone days, while instilling a sense of hope for the future.

On Wings of Hope: Leading Lily Home by Cynthia Lynch Bischoff may be somewhat of an enigma to those who don’t relate to the transcendent or to a reality beyond what is perceptible to our senses. Nonetheless, this eloquently written narrative is the living record of a lady crisscrossed by the personal history of a terminally ill young woman (Lily), and the most intimate fibers of her own being.

‘Based on a true story and filled with wisdom and life lessons, this account describes Lily's inspiring passage from despair to enlightenment as a result of Bischoff's unconventional therapy and compelling and inspirational view of the afterlife. Her story, a journey from heartache to peace, demonstrates that the world is illusory and that we create our own reality.’

People write memoirs to fixate, analyze, share, or rethink past events. This book refers to important and significant moments in the authors life. My rating: 5 of 5 stars

‘A balanced life provides the foundation for ultimate life satisfaction.’...

Work-Passion-Life Balance: Finding Fulfillment Through Zones Of Efficiency by Dr. Matthew Kolinski is the perfect example of how a life-improvement book should be written. The book introduces concepts and principles that are crucial to obtaining a successful work and life balance through ‘zones of efficiency’.

The author states that he has had multiple failures in his life, but through those failures he believes he has found a method to the madness of balancing all the different roles that define him. More importantly, he believes this model can be used by anyone who would like a guide to finding ultimate life satisfaction by acknowledging the three main areas that define every one of us and finding ways to efficiently put them into perspective.

The overall tone was simply imparting knowledge, personal experience and wisdom in a gentle and generous way. The authors’ words will help to better equip you to interpret and handle life in a whole new way, which in turn will bring peace, love and joy into your life. If you are looking for inspiration and encouragement in the face of serious issues, this would come highly recommended from me.

Work-Passion-Life Balance: Finding Fulfillment Through Zones Of Efficiency is a wonderful read that will leave you feeling like a better person for having read it. It’s an impressive work by Dr. Kolinski and I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from him in the future. I would highly recommend this perceptive and intuitive read. A well-deserved five stars from me.

Origins (Century City Book 1) by Mike Solyom

Origins (Century City, #1)Origins by Mike Solyom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A well-crafted collection of short stories...

Mike Solyom's novel " Origins (Century City Book 1)" has all the elements of a great science-fiction military-based plotline using an alternate version of the present-day. From the opening pages the book is extremely visual. The author never bores with details, but the scenes are descriptive enough that they come vibrantly alive in the reader's mind as if watching a major motion picture.

This is what the Alternate-History Fiction genre is all about. Alternate History looks at history and asks the question: 'What If?' What if British India hadn't occurred? What would have happened if the American capital city had been built elsewhere - say, where New Orleans is today? Would that have altered the course of history? Alternate history can ask and answer so many questions - and sets your thoughts chasing off on all sorts of trails!

I absolutely enjoyed this collection of short stories and give the book a well-deserved five stars. Highly recommended and looking forward to reading more from this author.

The Book of Nocera (Part One) by Luke Raven is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn settings and characters. The author weaves a well-crafted Fantasy Action & Adventure that will captivate the reader from the start. Skillfully constructed, this exciting and action-packed sci-fi fantasy will have you turning the pages from beginning to end. This for me was a phenomenal read. It’s one of those stories that stayed with me long after I finished reading it. The vivid descriptions of the settings, situations, and the people were stunning. The author’s use of genuine dialogue further added to the overall atmosphere of authenticity. The ending has left the door open for at least a sequel, but it has the potential for making a great series.

The Complete Anthology: John Lars Zwerenz

The Complete Anthology: John Lars ZwerenzThe Complete Anthology: John Lars Zwerenz by John Zwerenz
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A poet in a class of his own...

John Lars Zwerenz is world class all the way. Poetry has lost a lot of its flavor in this new age. When time moves past the current age, the next generation are always influenced by the previous generations even if that influence manifests as a rejection of the values of those who've gone before. Zwerenz 's poetry, however, lacks the awkward self-consciousness of post-modernism even when it compliments it, and that is its beautiful defining element. Highly recommended.

Arcadia's Children 3 Pushley's Escape by Andrew R. Williams is the third installment in the Arcadia's Children series. The author weaves another well-crafted sci-fi fantasy that will grab readers and hurl them far beyond the boundaries of our limited world. The threads of storytelling are expertly woven in this highly imaginative science fiction tale that guarantees the attention of the reader. Skillfully constructed, this fantasy will have you turning the pages from beginning to end. The imagery in the writing style makes you feel like you are right there in the story.

As with the previous two books in this series the ARCADIA’S CHILDREN: SAMANTHA’S REVENGE and ARCADIA’S CHILDREN 2: THE FYFIELD PLANTATION, the main characters remain the same; Mick Tarmy, Claire Hyndman and Nonie Tomio. The author introduces us to this installment with the following synopsis: ‘Ed Pushley is an archaeologist, but his mind has been taken over by a spettro that Mick Tarmy dubbed as Irrelevant. (My name is Irrelevant, Mr. Tarmy.) …Irrelevant and Pushley are now one. Following Irrelevant’s death their minds have fused. Kept captive by Alton Mygael, Pushley frantically tries to find a means of escape. Damaging his isolation helmet during a moment of frustration, Pushley realizes that with perseverance he can remove it, and can use Irrelevant’s immense psychic powers to gain his freedom. Once he does, what will he do to Mick Tarmy and his team? Pushley is intent on revenge.’

I enjoyed the story, the continued character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s magic. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out.
