The Dar Lumbre Chronicles

The Dar Lumbre ChroniclesThe Dar Lumbre Chronicles by Don Johnston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A unique and wonderfully written Sc-Fi that was hard to put down...

Forty-some years ago my uncle gave me a science fiction anthology. It was a thick red hardback that I read from cover to cover. It inspired a lifelong love of the genre. The stories in that book made me think outside the box. They filled me with awe for the imagination it took to write them. That book still remains in my collection today. The title is OMNIBUS OF SCIENCE FICTION, edited by Groff Conklin, a well-known and prolific editor of the genre. It was published in 1952, the Golden Age of Science Fiction. It’s a substantial volume, 562 pages, with 43 stories divided into sections relating to a common theme. Some stories are fun, some are thought-provoking, and some are adventurous. I love them all.

The Dar Lumbre Chronicles by Don Johnston is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a clever web of intrigue in this well-crafted Sci-Fi that will captivate the reader from the opening chapter. Skillfully constructed, this well-written and unique story will have you turning the pages from beginning to end.

I’m a big fan of Sci-Fi, so this for us was a phenomenal read. It’s one of those books that stayed with me for several days after I finished reading it. The vivid descriptions of the settings, situations, and the people were stunning and realistic.

I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Don Johnston in the future. Highly recommended reading and a well-deserved five stars from me.

OM: LIFE'S GENTLE REMINDERS by Kamini Wood

OM: Life's Gentle RemindersOM: Life's Gentle Reminders by Kamini Wood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Stop and smell the roses...

The author has laid this book out so brilliantly that you can take it with you wherever you go, reading a few pages at a time, as each chapter is broken down into many little chapters. It's a fast read straight through, but there is so much information packed into it, that you are going to want to read a little bit at a time. And it will be hard to put down.

OM: LIFE'S GENTLE REMINDERS by Kamini Wood comprises short analogies that offer a new way of looking at things. She espouses that when we can relate our everyday experiences to the greater experience of building ourselves into the self-leaders we are meant to be.

In case you haven't read a good self-help book in a while, let me recommend this one that I have on my digital shelf and one I like to pick up now and again just to read to re-motivate myself. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

LOVE AND FEAR ON THE SANTIAGO PATH

Amor e Medo no Caminho SantiagoAmor e Medo no Caminho Santiago by Gonçalo J. Nunes Dias
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A superb novel...

LOVE AND FEAR ON THE SANTIAGO PATH is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive psychological thriller by Portuguese novelist Gonçalo J. Nunes Dias. I’m a big fan of this author after having read some of his previous books, MANUAL FOR MURDER and THE GOOD DICTATOR series.

The book description gives only a sneak preview: ‘A young man decides to do the Santiago Path alone. There he meets Valeria, a young Brazilian who, after a bad break-up, is eager to start a new life. The two meet each other, walk together and end up falling in love. As they begin making plans for their future, however something unbelievable happens in the middle of the Path and they’ll have to fight, not only for their relationship but also for their lives.’

This was another fascinating and captivating read that had me engaged from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this thrilling page turner that will take the reader on a truly spellbinding journey.

‘Only for readers who like a good twist and strong emotions.’ Highly Recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

Tough Decisions In Care Of Elderly Loved Ones: Dignity I Safety I Quality of Life (A guide for caregivers)

Tough Decisions In Care Of Elderly Loved Ones: Dignity I Safety I Quality of Life (A guide for caregivers)Tough Decisions In Care Of Elderly Loved Ones: Dignity I Safety I Quality of Life by Mahesh Moolani MD
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An invaluable, practical, and sympathetic guide...

As our population ages, and in light of the Covid 19 pandemic, this book could not have been written at a more appropriate time. Caring for the needs of our loved ones is a natural part of the family dynamic. Natural expectations of caring within a family typically supersedes the normal abilities and emotional resources of individual caregivers. Often, it is during times of crisis that families realize that the designated caregiver is not adequately supported and equipped to meet the increasing needs of an elderly or disabled loved one.

Caregivers whose basic needs are not met have a difficult time meeting the care needs of their loved ones. Knowing when and how to seek assistance in caring for a loved one can help alleviate caregiver stress and ensure that the needs of your loved one still meet a high standard.

A wide range of topics are discussed in this excellent book from empathy and patience to dementia heart disease, lung conditions, cancer and many more. The topic on the factors caregivers must consider about themselves especially resonated with me.

No family home should be without a copy of this book. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough, and only wish it had been written sooner. A well-deserved five stars from me.

The Survival of the Richest: An Analysis of the Relationship between the Sciences of Biology, Economics, Finance, and Survivalism

The Survival of the Richest: An Analysis of the Relationship between the Sciences of Biology, Economics, Finance, and SurvivalismThe Survival of the Richest: An Analysis of the Relationship between the Sciences of Biology, Economics, Finance, and Survivalism by Anthony M. Criniti IV
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

‘One of the greatest forms of wealth of our species is found in the unity of all peoples.’

The Survival of the Richest: An Analysis of the Relationship between the Sciences of Biology, Economics, Finance, and Survivalism by Dr. Anthony M. Criniti IV is a masterclass in finance and economics that ‘integrates some of the hardest concepts of several very important fields of scientific inquiry’. It’s a well-researched body of work that covers a wide variety of topics, not least, the survival of humanity itself.

In order for this world to survive the author states that ‘we must use the same determination and energy level to resolve the current human predicament that we have used to create it. That is, we must exert as much control over our destiny as we have done over the rest of reformed nature. Self-control is a major part of our solution!’

It would take another book in itself to thoroughly review this one! For me to say that this book is “in a nutshell” would be very disingenuous to the author. It’s thought-provoking, sometimes depressing but also has a continuous thread of hope and optimism running through it. The author uses simple language throughout which makes this book accessible to anyone who has an interest in the subject matter.

Solar Warden

Solar WardenSolar Warden by Peter Fuller
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An exciting and suspenseful military sci-fi that will have you on the edge of your seat!

Author Peter Fuller worked in the Military History Department of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for eight years. He has studied military history for decades. He has also written numerous articles and lectured at major museums and universities on the subject of military history. He is a regular panelist at NORWESCON - the Pacific Northwest’s Premier Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention.

He's a student of the UFO phenomenon since grade school, a member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), and legend has it, he's had a few “close encounters” of his own! Having recently interviewed the son of a US military officer about his late father’s work on several special access projects for the secret space program, it’s no wonder this book had to be written!

Solar Warden by Peter Fuller is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn settings and characters. The author weaves a well-crafted Military Science Fiction that will captivate the reader’s attention from the start. Skillfully constructed, this exciting and suspenseful sci-fi will have you turning the pages from beginning to end. There’s plenty of imagery in the writing style that makes you feel you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘US Air Force combat pilot Colonel Steve Richardson suffers a severe head injury when his F-35 crashes in the mountains of northern Afghanistan. Awaiting death, Richardson is convinced he's hallucinating when an unusual craft appears and rescues him. It conveys him to a massive spaceship in orbit where he receives treatment for his wounds.

Once recovered from his injury, Richardson is introduced to a covert space force called "Solar Warden" – a secret space program that has been in operation for forty years. It utilizes futuristic technology to defend earth against a paranormal alien threat determined to destroy earth's inhabitants. Everything he discovers is part of a breakaway civilization, completely unknown to the inhabitants of earth.

Richardson agrees to join the program, but he struggles to master technology half a century beyond his training and experience – technology that utilizes physics that hasn't even been discovered yet by the greatest minds back on earth.

Doubtful he can learn the skills necessary to become an asset to the program, Richardson fears he may become just another casualty in this interstellar war. Regardless, he presses forward, hoping he can help turn the tide of battle against an alien enemy that is even deadlier than it seems. An enemy with a supernatural, demonic nature that if victorious, could mean the end of humanity.’

This for me was a phenomenal read. It’s one of those stories that stayed with me long after I finished reading it. The vivid descriptions of the settings, situations, and the people were stunning. The author’s use of genuine dialogue further added to the overall atmosphere of authenticity. The contrast between tone and content is a characteristic talent of only a few authors. Fuller pays as much attention to his sentences as he does to his plots, shifting or consolidating meaning with the use of a single word. His writing is impeccably honed, full of juxtapositions and qualifications that help to create a genuine and realistic contemporary sci-fi novel.

It’s one of those books that comes along occasionally that will make you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. For science fiction fans looking for an interesting, three-dimensional, and stimulating read, this would be a great find. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.

I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Peter Fuller in the future. I would recommend this book and also add that it has a distinctly cinematic feel to it. Highly recommended reading and a well-deserved five stars from me.
