Tabernacle by Marc Cavella

TabernacleTabernacle by Marc Cavella
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A first-class neo-Western noir with perfect pacing...

Tabernacle by Marc Cavella is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a well-crafted suspenseful mystery with a generous sprinkling of dark humor. The story had every element a good story should have. A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book.

I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class Neo-Western style novel with perfect pacing.

The contrast between tone and content is a characteristic talent of only a few authors. Cavella pays as much attention to his sentences as he does to his plots, shifting or merging meaning with the use of a single word. His writing is impeccably honed, full of juxtapositions and qualifications that help to create a humorous atmosphere that will leave you laughing out loud.

Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

The Guardians of Erum and the Calamitous Child of Socotra

The Guardians of Erum and the Calamitous Child of SocotraThe Guardians of Erum and the Calamitous Child of Socotra by A. Ali Hasan Ali
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An epic historical fantasy inspired by the folklore and ancient history of Arabia...

The Guardians of Erum and the Calamitous Child of Socotra by A. Ali Hasan Ali is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn settings and characters. The author weaves an enchanting and suspenseful tale that will captivate the reader’s attention from the start. Skillfully constructed, this epic historical fantasy, inspired by the folklore and ancient history of Arabia, will have you turning the pages from beginning to end. There’s plenty of imagery in the writing style that makes you feel you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book.

This was a captivating read that had me mesmerized from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. What makes this story even more extraordinary is that A. Ali Hasan Ali began writing as a hobby during his youth to help him learn English. This is his debut novel.

There were plenty of intriguing moments that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much.

It’s one of those stories that come along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

Pete’s Big Chew by Debbie Hefke

Pete's Big ChewPete's Big Chew by Debbie J Hefke
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Learning important life lessons and having fun along the way...

More often than not children relate themselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances reading fiction can help them to get inspiration from the characters. These stories often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for them to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these stories at regular intervals can actually help them to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.

Debut children’s author and award-winning illustrator Debbie Hefke writes in a wonderfully simple and imaginative style that will guarantee the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a lovely story to share with them while learning about important life lessons.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘Pete decides to take a risk and chew gum for the first time with his best friend Sally. Things do not go as expected. So Many things go wrong as the kids navigate their way through solving a problem. In the end they should have just simply asked for help. Lesson learned by Pete when faced with having fun, protect yourself the best you can. Find out what happens and what he does for future problems.’

It seems to me that this book was created with a lot of love and joy and it’s clear that the author really enjoys creating such wonderful stories. Thank you for sharing with us the gift that you have obviously worked so hard to refine. We’ll be looking forward to Pete the polar bear’s next problem-solving adventure, ‘Pete’s Chilly Experience’. A well-deserved five stars from us!

Eastbound from Flagstaff: A NovelEastbound from Flagstaff: A Novel by Annette Valentine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An amazing story of courage, strength and faith...

Eastbound from Flagstaff by Annette Valentine is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters and settings. The author weaves a well-crafted historical tale set against the backdrop of the Great Depression in the 1920s and inspired by her own fathers life. Skillfully constructed, this amazing story about life and faith had me turning the pages from beginning to end.

The story unfurls in small acts, at first feeling slight to touch, then building in emotional substance. Into the spaces between the words, the author breathes a pulsating intensity that rolls like a motion picture camera. With an abundance of imagery in the writing style, it makes you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book.

For fans of Historical Christian Romance looking for an interesting, three-dimensional, and stimulating read, this would come highly recommended. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Annette Valentine in the future. A highly recommended read and a well-deserved five stars.

Altered Helix by Stephanie Hansen is book 1 in the Altered Helix Series. Battlemind: A Military Legal Thriller

Battlemind: A Military Legal ThrillerBattlemind: A Military Legal Thriller by Michael Waddington
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A thriller that maintains a taut, compelling hold from start to finish...

Author Michael Waddington weaves a gripping military legal thriller with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints a dramatic and riveting tale of military courtroom drama in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a fast-paced novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.

Throughout the novel, Waddington moves his tightly woven plot effortlessly from the larger to the smaller picture, bringing us a fascinating perspective of The Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG Corps), which encompasses the career path for military lawyers with all of its intrigue, hypocrisy, deception, paranoia and back stabbing. The principal characters are very well developed with the supporting cast all given sufficient detail to make them interesting and relevant.

It’s a first-class thriller with perfect pacing. Not much is as it appears here, which is just the way fans of mystery, thriller and suspense will want it! It's a solid legal thriller that benefits substantially from a raft of better-than-average elements.

I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. If you’re a fan of "A Few Good Men" or "JAG," you'll enjoy this book. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.
